GAP 15 Office Complex, Düsseldorf

The spectacular GAP 15 office complex, built on the former site of a major German post office facility, comprises an approx. 90 metre high tower with 24 storeys and a five-storey wing extension. The two building sections are interconnected by a bridge and a glass roof. The tower complex, built in the form of an ellipse, is glass panelled all the way round. In addition to their double-glazed units, the windows also feature an external single-panel glazing addition. Sun blinds prevent the rooms from overheating in the summer. In winter, the air cushion between the window panes ensures that heating costs remain low. To allow natural ventilation, every second façade element can be opened to create an air gap. The lower-level wing is reminiscent of the old postal building and actually incorporates the latter’s heritage-protected northern façade within its own new masonry. The result is a delightful contrast between old and new that also provides an imposing landmark for Düsseldorf’s inner city. The design was created by the internationally renowned architects J.S.K. of Düsseldorf. The gross floorspace above ground amounts to 42,000m². Integrated within the complex are retail outlets and bistros covering a total area of approx. 1,200m².
