BMW Group Werk Leipzig

The new factory site measures 208 hectares, with the developed area amounting to 290,000m2. This automobile production plant in the north of Leipzig has been built according to designs created by renowned London architect Zaha Hadid, who was able to win the order in a competition that attracted 200 contestants. Combination of the ensuing layout with designs of landscape architects GROSS.MAX from Edinburgh has created a complex which, while having a clear and distinct personality of its own, also communicates the Group’s commitment to transparency and openness. The general planning responsibilities lay with WPW Ingenieure GmbH headquartered in Saarbrücken, Germany. Duplicate production of the BMW 3 series of cars began in early 2005. Located at the centre of the complex is a uniquely designed central construction around which is grouped a circular complex of buildings housing the autobody fabrication department, the paint shop and the assembly department. As an architectural feature, there is no structural separation between the production and administrative areas – rather, they are closely intermeshed with one another. Numerous ecological compensatory measures have already been implemented in the wake of the plant construction project, enabling the BMW facility in Leipzig to be effectively integrated within its natural environment. As a result, it has been possible to combine exceptional engineering quality with a pleasant and commensurate working environment right across the board.
