Inspired by King Alfonso XII’s desire to build a luxurious hotel in Madrid that was capable of competing with the Paris Ritz, the Ritz Hotel shares with the Paris and Londres Ritz’, the reputation of being one of the most luxurious hotels in Europe.
The Ritz Hotel opened its doors in 1910 with His Majesty Alfonso XIII present. It was designed and built under the personal supervision of the legendary hotel businessman, Cesar Rita, who named it after himself.
Charles Mewes from París, and Luis de Landecho from Madrid were the architects in charge, and within a short time the walls of the future hotel rose highter than the magnolias, cedars and flowers from the neighboring Paseo del Prado.
