Crême de la crême: Swissôtel on the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin The premier thoroughfare of Berlin’s “City West” is able to offer visitors and revellers alike a number of new architectural masterpieces: the stylish sweep of the new Ku’damm-Eck by Meinhard von Gerkan (gmp) recreates something of the cosmopolitan sparkle of the Roaring Twenties. It is a successful symbiosis of “architectonics” and city planning – and a refined setting for the elegant Swissôtel on Kurfürstendamm. Curves and contiguous facades call to mind Berlin’s great architects – Erich Mendelssohn or Hans and Wassily Luckard. A circular edifice 45 m high rises above the base structure. Sweeping projections and recesses absorb the different eave heights of the neighbouring buildings. In front of the facade, storey-high pilaster strips assure the visual coherence of the entire external face, while the interior design perpetuates the motif in flowing lamella-like surfaces, including within the 274 rooms and 42 suites. OGRO ZS 8998 and FE 4998 door and window handles fit harmoniously into the whole, while integrated DORMA ITS 96 cam action door closers in all internal doors of the upper floors guarantee contemporary elegance and nvenience. For safety, there are 120 DORMA RMZ smoke detector systems, while in the kitchens and delivery areas, ED 200 swing door operators ensure that the vitality of the design is also reflected in the hotel services.
Prominent Features
